Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This year’s 60-day legislative session, which got underway last Monday, is my first as House Republican Leader. My agenda is simple: Fix Washington.

While it’s popular for lawmakers to talk about how short sessions aren’t meant for sweeping changes, the reality is we don’t have the luxury of time when it comes to fixing the growing catalog of crises affecting our district and state. We need honest assessments, accountability, and effective solutions—not acceptance of the status quo or halfhearted attempts at band-aid fixes.

House Republicans have six primary areas of focus this session:

That is not to suggest we are not focused on other issues, but these six policy areas will demand most of our attention. On the first day of session, I gave a speech on the House floor outlining our vision and explaining why we must have a greater sense of urgency when it comes to turning our state around.

The following day, Governor Inslee gave his annual State of the State address, in which he declared: “The state of our state is stronger than ever.”

It isn’t.

Here is the reality in Washington:

  • Record-high violent crime last year
  • State most impacted by retail theft
  • #1 largest increase in drug overdose deaths over the past year
  • #2 for all property crime
  • #3 for automobile thefts
  • Fewest police officers per capita behind all states and D.C.
  • #4 most expensive state to buy a home
  • #3 highest gas prices in the nation
  • #4 highest homelessness rate
  • Fewest housing units per household
  • 60% of students are failing math and 50% are failing reading
  • 63% of children under age five do not have access to a nearby childcare provider
  • 70% of critical salmon species are not meeting recovery goals or are “in crisis”
  • 60% of roads need maintenance totaling 11,000 miles of backlog

All under Governor Inslee’s watch and thanks to policies passed by Democrats in the Legislature.

We can and must do better. House Republicans refuse to settle for the status quo. We will continue offering bold, common-sense solutions that are grounded in an unrelenting commitment to improving the lives of everyone in Washington state.
