Radio Report: 2023 Legislature adjourns Sunday night after a few unexpected twists
The state Legislature adjourned its 105-day session Sunday night after a few unexpected twists. John Sattgast reports from the state Capitol.
SATTGAST: The afternoon began with House Republican Leader J.T. Wilcox resigning his leadership role.
WILCOX: “It was time to look back at my caucus, recognize just how talented and dedicated they are, and make room for new leadership.”
SATTGAST: A 70-billion-dollar state operating budget then passed without Republican support. House Republican Budget Leader Drew Stokesbary pointing out one of the reasons why. . .
STOKESBARY: “Washington remains one of the only states in the country that has not found a way to give the people of Washington broad based tax relief.”
SATTGAST: 15 Democrats also joined House Republicans Sunday evening against a last-minute “Blake” drug possession deal. Representative Gina Mosbrucker is the ranking Republican on the House Community Safety, Justice, and Reentry Committee.
MOSBRUCKER: “I would argue after reading this bill over and over and over that it actually sets many people suffering from addiction on the path of failure.”
SATTGAST: The bill itself failed on the House floor, 43 to 55. At 10 p.m., the Legislature called it quits
ROSTRUM: “Five, four, three, two, one, zero.” (Gavel bangs.) “We are adjourned!”
SATTGAST: Governor Jay Inslee saying he may call a special session before July 1 if lawmakers can reach agreement on a Blake fix. For now, lawmakers are heading home. John Sattgast, the state Capitol.
