VIDEO: The 24-hour fight against Washington’s first state income tax
Three days before the close of the 2026 legislative session, House Democrats brought Senate Bill 6346 to the floor. For more than 24 consecutive hours, House Republicans fought the bill to impose Washington’s first state income tax. They offered dozens of amendments to protect taxpayers, including proposals to require voter approval of the tax, lower the rate from 9.9% to 1%, protect small-business income, exempt retirement and military income, reduce the state sales tax, and prevent the income tax from later expanding to more people. Every one was rejected. The bill ultimately passed and Gov. Bob Ferguson signed it into law March 30.
