Stokesbary blasts House Democrats for ending 132-year-old rule protecting free and open debate
As the second week of the 2025 legislative session came to a close, House Democrats eliminated a 132-year-old rule established in 1893 that ensured free and open debate on the House floor. In a 54-33 vote, they reduced the supermajority two-thirds threshold previously required to end debate and advance bills to a simple majority.
House Republican Leader Drew Stokesbary spoke against the resolution: “Today is a sad day for the institution, a chilling day for the three million Washingtonians whose elected voices can now be silenced at any time.”
